For me, it’s always the boyfriend. Make that the ex-boyfriends, exponential emphasis on the plural. I found my Mr. Right almost as many times as Madonna says the word “material” in “Material Girl” (46, if you’re wondering). Every single one of those escape artists has popped into my head over the last few years, because practically every song that’s ever touched me emotionally is now available with the quick click of a mouse (and a debit charge of $0.99). These mental connections between my past boyfriends and the songs that embody our rocky relationships led me to create my first book, a collection of memoirs entitled “Boyfriends in Stereo.” Meet a few of my exes—a pothead with a pet ferret, a cocaine-addicted model, a substitute teacher who dropped hits of “E” instead of GPAs, a covert military operative, a busboy, and a football coach with an itchy, burning sensation he simply couldn’t blame on the locker room—and those were just the guys I dated within 12 months of migrating to chic Miami from conservative Kansas at age 20 in search of sun, cultural enlightenment and true love. Music was my therapist long before I could afford a real one. I think lots of women have embraced songs in the same way on a subconscious level. I’m not talking about “Wind Beneath My Wings” and countless sappy ballads of the world, though. I looked to lyrics wrapped in upbeat melodies that could motivate and inspire me to get back in the dating game without calling the departed degenerate “my hero.” Myspace URL: http://myspace.com/boyfriendsinsterRecent Blogsno blogs posted yet |
