Play through headphones

Sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forums.
So...Is it possible?
I tried, and it only plays through speakers. My headphones ARE working. I tested them using windows media player.
My friend during Bio class was playing it through his headphones. So why am I having trouble?
Im running vista, if that helps.
